The proclamation of 2013 as the International Year of Statistics (Statistics 2013) was intended to popularize the profession of statistics among young people and promoting the development of statistical science. Due to this significant event was the International scientific conference under the slogan "Statistics XXI century: new challenges, new opportunities."

   This is the second conference organized by the Department of Statistics and Demography Economics Faculty of Kyiv National Taras Shevchenko University (29-31 May 2013). This year the walls of a classical university and one of the first departments of statistics on the territory of modern Ukraine have gathered, according to participants, "Slavic statistical forum." Indeed, the conference was attended by 100 leading local and foreign scientists and practitioners in the field of statistics (27 doctors and 46 PhDs) representing 8 countries, 27 institutions of higher education, 7 statistical offices, 3 research centers, two institutes of the Academy Science. In particular, the representatives of the Polish economic universities (m. Krakow, Poznan, Katowice), Russia (State University of Management, Lomonosov Moscow State University, Russian State Social University, Orenburg State Agrarian University, National Research University "Higher School economy ", Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation), Belarus (Belarus State economic University, Belarusian trade and Economics University of consumer cooperatives Str., Minsk, Main statistical Office Gomel region). Slave cell enriched representatives of Moldova (Institute of Economy, Finance and Statistics of Moldova), Lithuanian (Aleksandras Stulginskis university), Azerbaijan (Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences) and Uzbekistan (Tashkent State Economic University).

   Ukrainian scientific community was represented by scientists and teachers from 10 regions of Ukraine: Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, Kyiv National Economic University", National Academy of Management, National Academy of Statistics, National Academy of Statistics, Accounting and Auditing, Donetsk national University, Lviv University, Lviv Academy of commerce, Ivano-Frankivsk Institute of management and Economics, Bukovina State University of Finance and Economic, Ukrainian State University of Finance and International Trade, Kyiv national University of trade and Economics, Oles Honchar Dnipropetrovsk national University , V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University, Research on the Science and Technology Enterprise," Institute for Demography and Social Studies of MV Ptukha, NSC "Institute of agrarian economy", the State Statistics Service of Ukraine, the Main Department of Statistics in the Chernivtsi region, the Central Statistical Office in Lviv region, Office of Statistics in the Kremenchug area, the Central Statistical Office in Zhytomyr region, State Fund for Fundamental Research.

   The conference was opened from speech Ukraine academician, and Head of theInstitute for Demography and Social Studies of MV Ptukha EM Libanova Ukraine. Honored guests of conference - heads of major departments of statistics (Kyiv region Vysochan P. and in Kyiv Vilenchuk R.) and Director General of STC statistical research of the State Statistics Service Pugachev M, highlighted the prospects of development of national statistics in the context of international regulations on ways of increasing prestige of statistics, and paid attention to the need for professional statisticians’ new sample.    The conference focused on four research areas:

   - Historical sources of statistics, present and prospects of development - discussed the problematic methodological issues of the use of statistical classifications in economics, assessment of quality of life, process modeling with saturation, formation and development of cross-border and customs statistics, the development prospects of the business surveys of enterprises, harmonization of census data with alternative forms of statistical observation at the regional level;

  - Statistical regularities of socio-demographic processes - raised questions macro statistics matching the needs of users; publicized the results of statistical studies of the structural imbalances of the national and regional development, labor market analysis of the new EU members states; evaluating the economic efficiency of human life and the quality of life of the population, its educational potential and social security in the context of international comparisons; the results of the statistical evaluation of the age income inequality; analysis and modeling of reproduction of the population of Ukraine and Eastern European countries in the context of the second demographic transition, the effect of the external evaluation of migration; measurement and modeling of the staff of researchers; estimating the hypothetical loss of Ukraine's population, a cohort analysis of mortality for the period 1897-2012, as well as methodological issues of reconstruction of the historical series of life expectancy tables and restore the demographic time series in Ukraine for 1850 – 2012.

   - Problems of information support of the analysis of macroeconomic processes - to report on modern methods of modeling and forecasting in the macro and meso-level of the economy, in particular the relationship between production, consumption and environmental, as well as in assessing the social impact of the implementation of government programs; Simulation foreign trade performance in services, the solvency of consumers of public services; highlighted the problematic issues of quantitative evaluation of intellectual property, stocks of natural energy resources, global food prices, the use of price indices to deflate the SNA, assess the effect of the international technical assistance on the basis of panel data; The statistical methods identify hidden phenomena: the shadow economy, smuggling volumes behavior of issuers in the stock market; a separate set of reports was devoted to regional aspects of the statistical analysis: as structural changes in the economy, the efficiency of the activities of credit unions, providing equilibrium exchange rate of the national currency, technological matrix of the economic system;

   - Modern Business Statistics - submitted results of the latest research in the field of business demography, financial and banking activities, in particular, credit risk and bankruptcies of economic entities and their ability to pay; the activities of financial intermediaries; entrepreneurial activity, taking into account the socio-demographic characteristics of entrepreneurs; competitiveness of business entities, as well as the development of methods for assessing the investment at the macro level.

   Section Chair noted the current level of scientific papers presented and the participants expressed their approval for the organization of conferences

   The conference developed recommendations for conduct in May 2014 at the Department of Statistics and Demography Statistics Forum on the theme: "Modern problems of statistical methodology and training of highly qualified statisticians."
